The busy December month brought out steady results, with seven wins and two defeats. The league continued to be assured, and though it started off with a 3-1 loss to West Ham, a 3-1 win at Sunderland, followed by an 8-0 thrashing of Aston Villa and then one-goal margin wins against Norwich and Everton eased pressure off Benitez.

Even the final Champions League group game win could not save Chelsea’s fate as other matches could not go in the Blues’ favour. What will hurt most is the loss in the FIFA Club World Cup, another reward for Champions League success last time round. A necessary 3-1 win against Monterrey was lifting, but Chelsea succumbed to a 1-0 loss to Corinthians as the travelling to Japan took its toll on mentally-shattered players.
