The culmination of hard work was seen in a strong April month, with six wins, one draw and two defeats. The FA Cup replay against Manchester United was settled with a fine Demba Ba goal. The road to the final was cut short at Wembley’s semi-final against Man City, however. With the power of Drogba not a thing of the past, the current could not see their way through City, losing 2-1.

It was a continuation of plodding along in the league as Sunderland was overcome 2-1, followed by a 3-0 win at Fulham. A last-gasp Suarez equaliser, after the Uruguayan had bitten Branislav Ivanovic earlier in the match, meant the spoils had to be shared, before ending the league month on a high with a 2-0 win against Swansea.

The real success was evident in the Europa League, however. The quarter-final stage proved to be more problems than first anticipated, with a second-leg 3-2 loss to Rubin Kazan, but the first-leg 3-1 home win thankfully rendered that irrelevant. The semi-final got off to the perfect start with a 2-1 first-leg win against Basel away from home.
