The last match with AVB in charge was a 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion. Fans’ discontent reached a maximum and he was gone just 24 hours after the match. Roberto Di Matteo’s assistant role was furthered to the interim manager role, overseeing a steady Premier League month, starting with a well-earned 1-0 win against Stoke. A loss to Manchester City preceded a draw to Tottenham, before seeing past Aston Villa 4-2.

But the league was not where Roberto Di Matteo’s strengths lay. The crown was already long gone, so attentions – rightly so – focussed on other competitions. The FA Cup was a real chance for success, first seeing through the replay against Biminghal 2-0, before thumping Leicester City 5-2.

But the Champions League was the real highlight. Chelsea managed to prevail against Napoli 4-1 after extra-time, meaning a quarter-final tie against Benfica awaited. The first leg was a valuable 1-0 away win.
