The new season heralded a new era for Chelsea Football Club. The 2010/2011 season has seen Chelsea fail to get any trophy, and so Carlo Ancelotti was replaced with a new man in the name of Andre Villas-Boas.

Chelsea cited his “ambition, drive and determination” as being particularly encouraging, which led him to being the “outstanding candidate” for the job: “He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time.”

July was a good month for the 33-year-old. Small victories against Portsmouth and a Malaysian XI, followed by thrashings of Thailand All-Stars and Kitchee brought much optimism for the season ahead.

Chelsea won their first silverware of the season, winning the Barclays Asia Trophy, and a 3-1 victory against Rangers completed a convincing pre-season for Andre Villas-Boas.
