January was a good, if not convincing, month for Chelsea.

The dismal end to December did not continue into the new year, with a valuable 2-1 win at Wolves in the league. A hard-fought 1-0 win against Sunderland then followed, but two newly-promoted sides in Norwich, and then Swansea, proved to be the sticking point for Chelsea.

The FA Cup campaign of the season kicked off with an assured 4-0 triumph against Portsmouth, but the next round proved to be a sterner test against Premier League opposition in the face of Queens Park Rangers. However, Chelsea managed to win 1-0, a reverse of the Premier League score-line in October.

The transfer window was open, and after some controversial exits in Nicolas Anelka and Alex, who both fell out with AVB, Gary Cahill was brought in, as was youngster Kevin De Bruyne, who was loaned straight back to Racing Genk.
