April was another fine month for Chelsea, who were salvaging their season after the demise earlier in the season.

The Premier League results continued to be without pattern, beating Wigan to edge closer to getting the fourth spot, but draws to Fulham and then Arsenal halted that progress, despite an excellent 6-1 win against London rivals Queens Park Rangers.

The FA Cup was another high for Chelsea, winning 5-1 in the semi-final at Wembley against Tottenham, to set up another Wembley trip, this time in the final against Liverpool.

The Champions League once caught the attention, however. The marginal first-leg lead over Benfica last month was finished off with a 2-1 second-leg victory. This set up a tie against nemesis Barcelona, and though Barcelona were favourites, Roberto Di Matteo’s clever and effective tactics, if not one for the purist, saw Chelsea win 1-0 at home.

This was furthered in one of Chelsea’s greatest matches of the season, if not all-time, somehow managing to draw 2-2 after being 2-0 down with 10 men. This meant a 3-2 aggregate win was enough to join Bayern Munich at their own party in the final on 19th May.
